Biography
Someone should check the water in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, because the sleepy little town produces an inordinate number of talented folks, including Paul Newman, Fred Willard and our girl, Molly Shannon.Unfortunately for Molly, it wasn’t a carefree childhood spent in the idyllic Ohio countryside; her mother, younger sister and cousin were all killed in a horrific car crash when the future star was only 4.Molly Shannon’s father did his best to raise the young girl on his own, instilling both a strong work ethic and a kind of twisted sense of humor.
molly shannon does improvIt was while in grade school that Molly Shannon got her first taste of being on stage. Her school put on a fairly ambitious St. Patrick’s Day play, complete with choreography. Encouraged by her father, Molly mastered the dances and literally pushed herself to the front of the stage to bask in the spotlight -- a performer from day one it seems. Her progressive school also offered a course in improv, which Molly Shannon enrolled in, and she was instantly hooked. She calls this class a real turning point in her life.Like many aspiring stars, Molly found it hard to admit to her friends and family that she wanted to be an actress. However, anyone that saw her perform knew Molly Shannon was a special talent. Spurred on by their encouragement, she moved to New York and studied drama at NYU.Armed with a BFA and boundless ambition, Molly Shannon headed to L.A. to conquer Hollywood. Things didn’t go exactly as planned. Good looks, phenomenal comic timing and a degree from NYU don’t guarantee you anything, and Molly struggled to get work. Small parts in movies like Phantom of the Opera and one-off appearances on Seinfeld, Ellen and General Hospital gave the young actress a glimmer of hope, but she still needed her proverbial big break.

For a while, it looked like Molly Shannon would be one of them. She sent in tapes, showed up to live casting calls, but never heard back. Then, in 1995, Janeane Garofalo left SNL mid-season and the producers remembered a vivacious brunette who had auditioned numerous times in the past. It was time she got her shot -- Molly had finally done it, and a lifetime of perseverance in the face of setbacks and tragedy was rewarded.During her seven-year run on that seminal sketch show, Molly Shannon produced some of its most memorable characters, from ultra-awkward schoolgirl “Mary Katherine Gallagher” to catatonic NPR-host “Teri Rialto.”
molly shannon stars in kath & kimEddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell: all were SNL alum who left the show and went on to fame and fortune. Molly Shannon seemed primed to join them when she left in 2001, but life had other plans for her. While she certainly didn’t have to apply for food stamps, Molly was reduced to bit parts in movies like Shallow Hal and The Santa Clause 2. It was nothing like the grandiose visions she had for her career."You can’t keep a good girl down;" "The cream always rises to the top;" pick your cliche, because Molly was always destined to make it back. She was only in a few scenes of Will Ferrell’s Talladega Nights, but she stole every single one of them. Then, she landed the lead in the critically acclaimed indie comedy/drama Year of the Dog, showing she could do both serious and funny.Molly Shannon’s name then caught the attention of the producers of Kath & Kim, and they offered her the lead role of a sassy single mother raising an equally sassy daughter, played by Selma Blair.Nothing in her life has been easy, but Molly Shannon is back. And this time, it looks to be for good.
